Indian Railways is set to implement new luggage regulations that mirror those of airline companies. The proposed rules will require passengers to weigh their baggage at key railway stations using electronic machines, a policy that marks a significant change from previous practices. The new system is designed to streamline travel and ensure a more comfortable journey for all passengers, particularly on long-distance routes.
Under the new policy, passengers will no longer be able to travel with baggage exceeding a predetermined weight limit for their respective class. If a passenger’s luggage is found to be over the specified limit, they will be required to pay an extra fee. This measure is expected to be a boon for passengers who travel with less baggage, as it will free up space and reduce clutter in the coaches.
The weight limits vary according to the class of travel. According to the existing rules, First Class AC passengers are allowed a maximum of 70 kg of luggage per seat. For Second Class AC, the limit is 50 kg, while Third Class and Sleeper Class passengers can carry up to 40 kg. Passengers in General Class are permitted to carry a maximum of 35 kg of luggage.
The new rules also address the issue of oversized bags. The policy states that a penalty can be imposed on large-sized bags that take up excessive space in the train coaches, regardless of their weight. This is a critical step to ensure that aisles and seating areas remain clear, improving movement and overall comfort for everyone on board.
According to Himanshu Shukla, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of the Prayagraj Division of North Central Railway, the initiative's primary goal is to "ensure a more efficient and comfortable travel experience, especially for passengers on long-distance routes." The new system will be rolled out in a phased manner, starting with major stations.
The initial rollout will cover key stations under the North Central Railway, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, and Etawah. Shukla confirmed that at these stations, passengers’ luggage will be weighed, and they will only be granted entry if their bags are within the specified weight limits. This new system promises to bring a disciplined approach to rail travel and align it with global travel standards.
